Next speaker at the VTLP Convention was Rob Roper of Vermont FreedomWorks.
Vermont Freedomworks fights for less government, lower taxes and more freedom in Vermont. Their mission is to turn ideas and policies into action. Those ideas can never succeed unless ordinary citizens are willing to stand up and fight for them. Their goal is to help ordinary citizens play a greater role in the government decisionmaking process, letting no cause involving their own rights and freedoms be lost by default.
Rob Roper spoke on a couple things that FreedomWorks has been working on. Vermont Freedomworks launched an information and lobbying campaign on the following issues:
- Gas tax increases – Any increase in the gas tax is not an acceptable solution for finding the $24 million we need to match federal funds for highway projects.
- Universal Preschool – There is no logical reason to ask taxpayers to fund what is a takeover of the private preschool industry. Vermont is already well served by private preschool providers. FreedomWorks calls on Vermont legislators to end all raids on the Vermont Education Fund, and to preserve its use strictly for K-12.
Roper then advised the Vermont Libertarian Party to focus on the middle of the political spectrum. He cited that many people view the democrats as far to left, socialist in nature, and republicans as abondoning their principles of smaller government and lower taxes. He suggested that since Libertarians believe in social AND economic freedom we would be taking the best of both parties and position the VTLP in the middle, where more and more people view themselves.
