The Premise of Surfer:
A psychological thriller where a nameless middle-aged financier (Nicolas Cage) returns to his childhood beach with his son to Luna Bay, Western Australia, to share the joy of surfing and to buy back the clifftop house where he grew up. Local surf bros led by the messianic Scally (Julian McMahon) chant “Don’t live here, don’t surf here” and run them off the beach. Dad refuses to leave, choosing a parking-lot standoff that escalates into a sun-baked descent from anxious dad to barefoot rat-eater. Think Falling Down meets Point Break after being left in a hot car.
The film premiered at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival and was released in U.S. theaters on May 2, 2025.
Also, Julian McMahon passed away over the weekend, this being one of his last films.
I feel this is one of Cage’s best performances. More on my thoughts below in the spoilers section…
