  Finnegan loves unreliable perspective (Vivarium fans nod here). The mid-film “It was all a test” speech can be read two ways:

  • Literal cult hazing. The Bay-Boy-style gang toy with outsiders; Scally really was deciding if Cage was “worthy.”

  • Psychotic break. The reveal arrives during Cage’s heavy dehydration and after multiple hallucinations; Scally might be a projection of Cage’s own toxic-masculine inner critic. • My Thoughts

  I liked the movie. It felt like a rollercoaster of emotions. You’re often not sure what is going on… is he nuts or is this really happening to him. Throughout the film, others are hinting that he is not in his right mind, but then others validate what is happening to him and his memories.

  At first you are thinking “good for him” for resisting the local bullies. Further into the film, you start thinking “cut your losses” and you think he’s in over his head here. 

  Also, I began to think why would you want to live here anyway?? If Scally’s family essentially controls the town. There would always be problems with that. It’s a blessing to find out now before buying his childhood home.

  It seems that Cage’s character is being obsessive and not rational, which is why you question his sanity throughout the film. I get the nostalgia of his childhood experience and wanting to share it with his son. However, it seems that this obsession is there very thing that caused him to lose his family.

  At one point I thought maybe he and the other man are the same person and the son he lost was his own son already and that he’s confused over the timeline, especially when the policeman implies the other man’s car is his.

  Instead of focusing on recreating the past, he should have focused on making new memories with them. It appears he worked very hard throughout his life to build this in his mind perfect life for his family while at the same time neglecting them to attain it. When in reality they just want you to be there.
