Public Hearing on Housing in Burlington
Tonight, Heavenly and I attended the Public Hearing on Housing in Burlington at C.P. Smith School. The turnout was quite good. However, the number of people speaking up was minimal.
Chittenden County FreedomWorks Meeting
Tonight, Heavenly and I attended the Chittenden County FreedomWorks meeting. I thought it was a very interesting meeting with a good turnout. We discussed the top issues facing Vermont including Health Care, Education, Taxes, and Property Rights.
City Council Meeting
At tonight’s city council meeting councilor Kurt Wright proposed a resolution that would place the following question on the ballot of the March, 2006 Annual City Meeting: “Shall the Vermont Legislature be urged to adopt legislation that would require that bargaining for teachers contracts in Vermont be accomplished either on a state wide basis with the possibility of allowances for legitimate regional differences, or, alternatively, on at least a regional basis?”.
Housing Super-Committee Meeting
We attended the Housing Super-Committee tonight. The discussion was about what can be done to improve the housing situation in Burlington.
Burlington Libertarian Party Urges Burlington to Not Pursue Rent Control
The stated purpose of the new rent control resolution proposed by councilors Fiermonte, P-Ward 3 and Ashe, P-Ward 3 is to help fix high rents. While the resolution was written with good intentions, the practice of rent control does not work. The problem is based on simple economics. The supply is less than the demand and you do not fix the supply by attacking it.
